With far more up its sleeve than its popular signature ‘green’ wine, northern Portugal’s Vinho Verde region also produces refreshing rosé. This example is made by Quinta da Calçada, one of the oldest producers in the region with 60 hectares of estate grapes, all overseen by winemaker João Cabral de Almeida. And it’s a delight to drink. Bright citrus fruit and raspberry notes are made to feel even fresher thanks to a slight effervescence and vivid acidity. This wine will cut through fried fish dishes like calamari perfectly, but will also pair nicely with more delicate nibbles such as sushi or sashimi.
